Feeding your cat: things to consider

When you first bring your kitten home, it is best to continue feeding him the food he is used to. Not all kitten foods are the same - for example, the raw materials in some are of much higher quality than others. That's why you may want to change your kitten's food to one recommended by your veterinarian. You will need a period of 5 to 7 days to make this change; Your veterinarian will give you advice on this matter. You should mix the old and new food by increasing the proportion of the new food and decreasing the proportion of the old food until the new food becomes his only food.

As you can tell, a kitten's stomach is tiny; so he will need small but frequent meals initially. This means putting fresh food in a clean bowl almost 4 times a day until your kitten is 6 months old.

Choose carefully

An "instant" kitten food, available in easy-to-serve kibble or canned food, will provide all the vitamins and minerals your kitten needs. If you're not sure which one you should buy, your veterinarian will advise you on the food that would be best for your pet. However, no matter which food you choose, you should use it in accordance with the feeding amounts on the package and be careful not to give your kitten too much food.

thirsty kittens

Believe it or not, kittens do not need milk. And in some cats, cow's milk can actually cause diarrhea. So, if you want to give your kitten some milk, specially formulated cat milk is available. However, please ensure your kitten has clean drinking water in his bowl at all times. If you suspect he is not drinking enough water, it is possible that he has tasted chemicals in the water; That's why you should give bottled water to your kitten. Some cats prefer to drink from running water sources, such as water fountains or dripping faucets; Therefore, you can buy water fountains designed especially for cats. And remember, it's essential to give your kitten plenty of water if he's on a dry, crunchy diet.

Don't worry, it's normal to get sick sometimes

If your kitten has a slight digestive issue or needs to vomit up a hairball, he will make himself sick by eating grass. This is quite natural and there is nothing to worry about. However, if vomiting continues and other symptoms occur, you will need to consult your veterinarian.
