Overcoming hairballs

Almost every cat owner has seen a hairball or heard the annoying sound their cat makes when trying to cough it out. Hairballs are easy to recognize because they take a shape that distinguishes them from cylindrical (tube-shaped) masses of feathers. Sometimes a hairball will be accompanied by bile or kibble particles. It is the hair your cat swallows while licking that forms hairballs in its stomach. Cats cannot spit out hair because their tongues are covered with hundreds of tiny spines that point backwards. These barbs do not allow your cat to pass the hair to the front of its mouth. Another reason why these occur is that cats cannot eliminate hair from their body through feces.

Accumulation

Swallowing hair is mostly not a problem for cats; But sometimes, the hairs accumulate and form a hairball. Long-haired breeds are particularly susceptible to this condition. If your cat occasionally develops hairballs, there is no need to worry. However, if he regularly produces hairballs or appears to be having serious problems, you should talk to your veterinarian.

Problems

Hairballs can cause problems if they harden in the stomach and the cat is unable to remove them. Signs that your cat may be having trouble with a hairball include:

  • constipation
  • hard stools with signs of dander
  • gagging or coughing, especially after eating
  • loss of desire to feed

Prevention

The best thing you can do to prevent hairballs from forming is to comb your cat's fur regularly. This is a must for long-haired breeds. Brushing will remove dead hair, making them much less likely to swallow stray hairs.

Most cats love to be brushed; Therefore, it is the perfect opportunity to bond with your cat. In the spring, when your cat will shed its long winter fur, you should take extra care when brushing its fur.

In addition to brushing, there are some methods you can use. For example, there are various foods or supplements that can help control hairballs.

These methods function by making it easier for your cat to pass the hair through the body as part of digestion. If you talk to your veterinarian, he will be able to recommend the best solution for you.
