Care of your puppy's fur

Start with coat care

Regardless of the length of your puppy's fur, grooming your puppy's coat should be done every day. This won't feel like a torment; Most dogs enjoy being groomed and petted - especially if it's started early.

Using your puppy's special brush, start combing his fur briefly; You just need to touch his entire body from head to toe. Gradually extend the crawling time, and when he stays still for a while, accepting what you're doing, take a break and reward him. This reward could be a walk, a game, or something to eat; This will help your puppy associate standing still with rewards, making grooming easier and more enjoyable for both of you.

Grooming on a table: If you sometimes groom your puppy on a table, he will get used to this position, which can be useful when you visit the vet or the groomer.

Sensitive areas: Your puppy's head area is very sensitive; Therefore, you should be more gentle with the brushes here. And if you notice discharge from his eyes or ears, consult your veterinarian.

If your puppy starts to fidget, hold him firmly with both hands until he stops. Talk to him and praise him every time he stops.

Trimming your puppy's fur and nails

Sometimes you may need to trim your puppy's fur - especially the hair around his eyes, ears and feet. This is something you can easily do on your own sometimes; However, if your dog requires a special haircut or trimming to maintain its good appearance for its breed, seek advice from a professional dog groomer.

Nails: Your puppy's nails should be checked regularly and trimmed appropriately to prevent bad snagging and painful nipping accidents. Likewise, this is also a job you can do; However, if you do not feel confident enough, your veterinarian or a professional groomer will do this job for you.

If you decide to trim your puppy's nails yourself, be careful not to cut the nails too short. Dog nail tips are sensitive and may bleed or be painful.

It's your puppy's bath time

The dog bath products available today are almost as numerous as those offered for humans and are much better suited to a dog's skin type than human shampoos. Therefore, choose a specific dog shampoo that is best suited to your puppy's coat (in long-haired breeds, the coat is likely to become matted and dirty more quickly and will require frequent bathing). When washing, be careful not to get soap in your puppy's eyes.

Safe bathing: If you buy a non-slip plastic mat and place it on the bathroom floor, your puppy will be less likely to slip and fall, giving him confidence during the bath.

Do you need to consult a hairdresser?

For the most part, and for most dogs, you can do the grooming yourself - it's an enjoyable experience that brings you and your pet closer together, and you'll be happy to devote time to it.

However, if your puppy will grow into a long-haired adult, he will need more care. The best person to cut and trim your hair is a professional hairdresser. It's obvious that you'll want a groomer who will make grooming enjoyable for your pup. You'll also want to ask about his experience and training, and perhaps see other dogs he's groomed.

If you are interested in finding a professional groomer for your puppy, your veterinarian will be able to give you advice and some suggestions.
