Autumn Tips for Pet Care

With the arrival of autumn, it also means shedding season for pets. However, your pets may get sick due to the cooling weather, and factors such as leaves, mushrooms and cones in the environment may pose a danger during daily trips. Here are the issues we recommend that you pay attention to your pet, just as you take care of yourself during the Autumn season…

The warming summer season is now behind us. Next is Autumn, with the weather starting to cool down and cloudy skies. We recommend that you take the same precautions for your pets as you do these days to avoid getting sick or getting depressed during the autumn season. Because they can also be affected by cold weather and get sick easily. Moreover, autumn-specific formations such as mushrooms and cones in nature can pose a danger to your cats and dogs. We thought you might want to take some precautions in Autumn for the lovely friends you care for at home. Here are our Autumn suggestions for those who keep cats, dogs and birds at home…

Hair care for cats and dogs

Cats and dogs have thinner fur as the weather gets warmer. Their feathers, which protect them from the cold, grow back in autumn. During this process, you can facilitate the growth of new hairs by giving your lovely friends relaxing massages and combing their feathers regularly.

When shedding begins in cats and dogs, there are things that need to be taken into consideration, from food selection to hair brushing, in order to grow healthy hair. For example;

  • Long-haired cats and dogs should be combed with a wide comb, and short-haired cats and dogs should be brushed. Thus, the weak hairs that need to be shed will fall out more quickly.
  • For healthy feathers, vitamins rich in amino acids, vitamin B and minerals should be used after receiving veterinary approval.
  • If necessary, the food should be changed. Care should be taken to ensure that the food selection is one that supports feather development.
  • When autumn comes, dogs should not be washed frequently. Frequent bathing causes the loss of the oil layer that nourishes dogs' skin. This causes skin sensitivity.
  • Cats and dogs should be provided with frequent sunlight.

Feather care in birds

In autumn, birds fluff up their feathers because they are cold and go into a state of sleep all the time to avoid wasting too much energy. After growing their winter feathers, they regain their former cheerfulness. If the bird you keep at home is in this situation, you do not need to worry. You can provide him with a nutritional supplement that supports feather development. When autumn comes, you should not change the location of the bird cage frequently, just ensure that it stays in a sheltered corner.

It is wrong to cover a large part of the cage while the birds are molting. In this way, you can negatively affect its feather change process by creating a constantly warm environment. You must give the bird time to adapt to the changing temperature. Covering the cage tightly can cause the bird to become stressed and upset. During this process, it may take a long time for the feathers of a bird that is stressed to regain its former health. In conclusion; A bird that continues to shed its feathers but cannot grow its winter feathers due to both stressful and cold weather may increase the risk of getting cold and getting sick.

Relocate the rest area

You may have placed the cat and dog bed or bird cage in an airy place such as a balcony or in front of a window so that your pet does not get bored in hot weather. Now you can renew your pet's rest area. Move the cat and dog bed to a warm corner of the house, and the birdcage to a sheltered corner. You can do the following to create a cozy resting area where your cute friends will feel safe:

  • Put a small mat under the cat and dog bed to protect it from the cold.
  • Do not place cat and dog beds or bird cages next to radiators or electric heaters. Cats and dogs can also get sick due to excessive heat, and birds can shed their feathers.
  • Position the bird cage so that it can remain in a sheltered area while ventilating your home.
  • If you are going to place the bird cage next to a wall facing the exterior of your home, put insulation on the back of the cage or cover that side of the cage with a thin fleece blanket.
  • Pet care in cold weather It requires meticulousness. Observe your pets who cannot express that they are cold and make the best decision for them.

When arranging your pets' resting areas, make sure that they are not close to devices such as sound systems or televisions where they may be exposed to excessive noise, and that they are not under intense light. Because excessive noise and light can cause them to get stressed.

Warning: Sudden weather changes can cause illnesses such as flu and cold in cats, dogs and birds at home. During such periods, you can provide your pet with vitamin supplements by obtaining veterinary approval.

Be observant

Even if the weather gets cold, you can take walks with your dog and sometimes let him wander freely in the garden. However, some dangers await them in nature in the autumn season. For example; such as mushrooms that form in moist air, seeds that fall from trees, leaves and cones. Your dog may quickly eat a mushroom he sees for the first time, and this may cause poisoning. In addition, tree seeds such as horse chestnut seeds and acorns can also cause poisoning and injuries.

Pine cones in autumn attract the attention of dogs. They may be in danger of serious injury when they try to chew pine cones, which they see as a teething toy. To protect your cute friends who face all these risks, be a good observer in the autumn season and never allow them to eat anything in nature. If you wish, you can wear a muzzle on your dog for its safety.

Warning: If you allow your cat to take walks in your garden or take walks in the park wearing a collar, we recommend that you take the same precautions for your cat.

Be careful with chemicals

Have you used mothballs and soap while putting away your winter clothes? So, while you are preparing for Autumn at home, be careful that your pets are not in the same environment. Because soap powders and naphthalene tablets are a threat to their health. So make sure you don't scatter mothballs and soap chips around.

If you are going to do a deep cleaning in your home in autumn, keep your cute friends away from contact with cleaning materials. After cleaning your home, ventilate it thoroughly and put cleaning materials on shelves where your cats and dogs cannot reach them.
